Education Events in the RE1J School District

The Gunnison Conservation District has partnered with many other agencies every year to bring two annual events to the Gunnison Watershed RE1J School District.

The 4th Grade Water Festival is held in May of each year.  Students learn about macro-invertebrates, aquatic ecology and food webs, water in agricultural uses, watersheds and erosion, water conservation, waterfowl migration and stopover habitats, riparian wildlife, and ethical camping around water sources.  Partners typically include Bird Conservancy of the Rockies, Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, CSU-Extension, the National Park Service, and the Upper Gunnison River Water Conservancy District.

The 7th Grade Mill Creek Youth Summit is held in September annually.  Students learn about aquatic macro-invertebrate sampling, watersheds, forestry inventory and tree diseases, wildlife telemetry, and Leave No Trace Camping ethics.  Partners typically include Bureau of Land Management, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Colorado State Forest Service, the National Park Service, United States Forest Service, and Western Colorado University.
